The Devil, Capricorn, Saturn and our New Moon Candle

This months new moon candle is in the pragmatic and saturnian sign of Capricorn which is depicted as a ram. The sign of Capricorn is noted for it’s responsible and hard working nature. Oddly, it is associated with the devil in the Major Arcana of the Tarot.

We almost shied away from posting the tarot association because, well…it’s the devil. Doing that felt inauthentic. We instead chose to take opportunity to examine something because it’s often misunderstood. Capricorn is ruled by the planet Saturn (we’ll get back to the devil in a bit) and Saturn tends to get a bad wrap. It’s even known as the great malefic of the planets. We think that’s unfair. In our eyes Saturn is more of a strict teacher- one that expects you to work like a Capricorn. If you work hard and diligently, Saturn will bestow you with gifts when the lesson is over. If not, then it bestows you with the harder lesson of “do it right or do it twice”. This particular new moon was also aligned with Pluto, the planet known for powerful and transformative energy.

What does all this mean to us? Simply, now is a great time to ground, set intentions, and responsibly prepare for an upgrade.

What about the Devil?

We’re glad you asked! The devil isn’t any entity- it’s a theme; an energy. It represents how you can stop yourself from reaching your goal no matter how supportive the planetary energy is. It is allowing yourself to be controlled by deceit, wantonness, fears, jealousy, inauthencity and addictions. It is the shadow of evolved Capricorn qualities. It is often depicted as Baphomet or a Pan like creature with a male and female chained to his throne. We like the depiction of the devil in the Ostara tarot a bit more. In this illustration a spindly figure with a ram skull head and moth like wings adds to its already full menagerie. We think the menagerie represents the carnal fears and impulses that prevent us from reaching our goals via self sabotage. It represents the unnecessary burdens we create and carry.

Think back to the ram; tenaciously climbing the side of a mountain, carefully placing one step after the other. Do you see it carrying anything on its back that would slow it down or throw it off balance?

Nope.

The current energy is benevolent to any transformation you want to make in your life so shake that devil off your back, get grounded, and start planning an upgrade worth working for.
